Every extremist group has the occasional moment when even its members go, "Wait a minute, that's too far".
Chelsea Clinton and Jake Tapper have condemned the picture of ex-comedian Kathy Griffin holding up a bloody severed prop of what is supposed to be Trump's head. But the publicity stunt is just the inevitable outcome of the "Resistance" mantra.
Once you accept the idea that President Trump is some illegal dictator who must be brought down by any means, such disagreements become tactical, rather than ethical, exercises.
Democrats can't only dissent from the extremist movement that has seized control of their faction when it turns to outright incitement to violence. Under a very low bar, it's nice that they are willing to condemn violence, real or imagined, but it is a very low bar indeed.
It's important to address the level of hatred. And the consequences which that hatred can have. And to recognize that this is not some unique phenomenon associated with President Trump. We've seen this circus of hate make the rounds before with fantasies about killing President Bush. It's not about Trump. It's about the innate extremism of the left.
And until Democrats recognize that, they will be sleepwalking into escalating violence.
