Hillary Clinton is promising to get serious on trade. In her "economic plan" which was light on economics and heavy on childish attacks on Trump, she promised action on trade to try and win back the white working class vote.
"It's also true that China and other countries have gamed the system for too long. Enforcement — especially during the Bush administration — has been too lax. Investments at home that would make us more competitive have been blocked. And American workers and communities have paid the price."
Remind me who was in the White House before Bush? It was a game named Clinton. And he also flip-flopped on trade policies, telling blue collar workers what they wanted to hear before pandering to the liberal technocracy.
Hillary Clinton is doing the same thing and she's barely even hiding it.
So my message to every worker in Michigan and across America is this: I will stop any trade deal that kills jobs or holds down wages – including the Trans-Pacific Partnership.
I oppose it now, I'll oppose it after the election, and I'll oppose it as President.
Hillary is a lawyer and she speaks in lawyerly technicalities. See if you can spot what she very carefully left out. Hillary opposes TPP now. At least she claims to. Just not in the past.
The Republican National Committee recently obtained video of Clinton, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, on an overseas trip in 2012 praising the TPP, a deal she said she could not support this past October. It appears that Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, will pounce on her reversal when he delivers a speech on trade policy Tuesday afternoon.
"This TPP sets the gold standard in trade agreements to open free, transparent, fair trade, the kind of environment that has the rule of law and a level playing field," Clinton said in 2012. "And when negotiated, this agreement will cover 40 percent of the world's total trade and build in strong protections for workers and the environment."
And if she's elected, she'll claim that she improved TPP and therefore there is no contradiction. In fact we know it will happen because that's what one of her closest allies already told us.
Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe, longtime best friend to the Clintons, said Tuesday that he believes Hillary Clinton will support the TPP trade deal if elected president, with some tweaks.
“I worry that if we don’t do TPP, at some point China’s going to break the rules -- but Hillary understands this,” he said in an interview after his speech on the main stage at the Democratic National Convention. “Once the election’s over, and we sit down on trade, people understand a couple things we want to fix on it but going forward we got to build a global economy.”
Pressed on whether Clinton would turn around and support the trade deal she opposed during the heat of the primary fight against Bernie Sanders, McAuliffe said: “Yes. Listen, she was in support of it. There were specific things in it she wants fixed.”
Hillary will oppose it during the election. If she wins, she'll support it. What politicians say during elections matters far less than when in office. As Secretary of State she supported it. We''re told that she would support it if she wins.
So what is Hillary doing now? What she always does. She's lying.
