Facebook has come under fire from the media left for allowing conservative sites to exist under the guise of the fake news scandals. It's also come under fire from the right for censoring them. The social media site has tried various approaches, including baking in media "fact checks" that will then censor stories and block sites if the media types don't like them.
Here's the next wave of censorship in which Zuck gives the media what it really wants, a profitable front row seat on the bus (while conservatives have to go to the back.)
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said Tuesday that the company has already begun to implement a system that ranks news organizations based on trustworthiness, and promotes or suppresses its content based on that metric.
Zuckerberg said the company has gathered data on how consumers perceive news brands by asking them to identify whether they have heard of various publications and if they trust them.
“We put [that data] into the system, and it is acting as a boost or a suppression, and we’re going to dial up the intensity of that over time," he said. "We feel like we have a responsibility to further [break] down polarization and find common ground.”
Such a system very obviously rewards major media corporations with very famous brands while "suppressing" less famous ones.
It doesn't break down polarization. It boosts the mainstream media and helps suppress conservatives.
