How the mighty have fallen.
But it's only fitting that the mainstream media personality whose oeuvre helped birth, "Fake, but accurate" should continue his comeback. And what a miserable comeback it is. Even Keith Olbermann got to do his YouTube rants for GQ, until something better came along, while Dan Rather has to settle for the Young Turks.
Former "CBS Evening News" anchor Dan Rather confirmed Sunday that he will be hosting a news program with the progressive online outlet The Young Turks Network (TYT).
Rather told CNN that, beginning Monday, he will be hosting “The News with Dan Rather,” a 30-minute program being sold as an “untraditional evening newscast” by the network.
The show will be available online weekly at 5:30 p.m., according to CNN.
I hope Rather does it while wearing a trench coat he picked up in a flea market. And bringing along his time traveling computer which can compose Vietnam War documents in Microsoft Word.
The Young Turks isn't an outlet. It had some success during the early days of online political video. These days it's more of a YouTube response troll making quick videos on trending news stories and relying on the YouTube algorithm to shove them at bored people killing a few minutes in the elevator.
Those people aren't going to watch Dan Rather bleating about how awful Trump is in his best imitation of Walter Cronkite. Uploading it at 5.30 is a sad gimmick that allows Rather to still pretend he has a newscast.
The next and inevitable scene of this drama is, "Mr. DeMille, I'm ready for my close-up."
