Identity Politics is Even Tearing Apart the Dem Leadership

The DACA negotiations are revealing the expected fault lines among Republicans. But they're revealing unexpected fault lines among the Dems.

There's the Hispanic Caucus being willing to trade the diversity lottery, which its members don't really benefit much from, for DACA, while the Congressional Black Caucus doesn't care much about DACA, but does care a whole lot about the diversity lottery.

The Dem base doesn't want any negotiations. Give 'em full amnesty or a government shutdown. The Dem leaders, who are a little nervous (even with the media on their side) about a government shutdown for even the world's cuddliest illegal aliens. And with elections that they're favored to do well in coming up. This doesn't sit well with the #resistance.

And after being berated enough, Rep. Nancy Pelosi decided to pander to the identity politics of the base.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., took a shot at immigration negotiations involving her top deputy, Minority Whip Steny Hoyer, slamming them as “the five white guys” -- and drawing a rebuke from Hoyer himself.

Speaking at her weekly press conference, Pelosi complained that the immigration talks did not include any minority members of Congress which she said was done intentionally to delay any agreement “since it would need sign-off from the Congressional Hispanic Caucus and others.”

“The five white guys I call them, you know,” Pelosi said. “Are they going to open a hamburger stand next or what?”

Pelosi is an idiot. But putting down her own leadership is stupid. Even for her.

In a statement made to Politico, Hoyer slammed Pelosi’s remarks.

“That comment is offensive. I am committed to ensuring DREAMers are protected and I will welcome everyone to the table who wants to get this done,” his statement read.

Except the left normalized this kind of behavior. And the Dems normalized the left.

"White guys" has long since become a standard putdown in lefty circles. Pelosi is just picking up on behavior that was unacceptable 15 years ago, but is commonplace now. And Hoyer might want to wake up and take a look around.

This is his party now.
