The media inhabits an imaginary world in which it practices serious journalism. And the only people who question that are right wingers (and according to polls the vast majority of Americans.)
The Mnuchin story is Exhibit 349 in why the media is a joke.
The story is simple. Somebody sent a box of horse manure to Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin. The media responded with undisguised glee and snickering. Here's the Washington Post's Democracy Dies in Darkness take on it.
"‘A gift-wrapped package of poo’: Why a man left a box of manure for Steven Mnuchin."
Why would anyone look at that and take the WaPo seriously?
If someone had sent a box of horse manure to an Obama cabinet member, the coverage would have been drastically different. And the sender would have been accused of racism or sexism. But never mind that. When the media blatantly gloats about a childish stunt aimed at a political opponent, it makes it clear that it's not only partisan, but unserious.
Partisan opposition can be serious and principled. But this is neither serious nor principled. It's meanspirited, petty and malicious. And that's the media in a nutshell.
