FACT CHECK: No, Michael Moore's Anti-Trump Show Was Not a "Smash Hit"

Michael Moore has the same relationship with truth as he does with diets. He thrives by staying far away from both. And after some criticism from President Trump, Moore threw a Twitter tantrum insisting that his play, The Terms of My Surrender, was a "smash hit".

"You must have my smash hit of a Broadway show confused with your presidency," the obese left-wing associate of Harvey Weinstein ranted on Twitter. "You ARE aware I'm a "B'way star"& I guess this bothers you more."

The Terms of My Surrender is a show only in the loosest sense of the word. Much like Moore's agitprop videos are documentaries. He is by no stretch of the imagination a Broadway star. And Terms is not remotely a smash hit. As Playbill points out.

While the show was not a box-office front-runner (grossing less than half of its potential most weeks and drawing in a capacity hovering in the mid 70 percentile), it did play its fully scheduled run.

Moore writes The Terms of My Surrender was the highest-grossing play (non-musical) of the summer. While it was indeed the highest-grossing among the plays that opened in the summer (alongside 1984 and Marvin's Room) during its time on Broadway, The Play That Goes Wrong grossed more in Moore's 12 full weeks. However Moore's first two performances, during the weekend of July 28–30, grossed significantly more than average (over 102 percent of its potential).

Comparing anything to 1984, which was a complete disaster in every sense of the word, is very faint praise.

Terms of My Surrender drew in enough Trump haters not to be a complete disaster. But after the first two performances, as Playbill notes, traffic dropped. And it never performed anywhere near a level that would qualify as a smash hit.

But Michael Moore lives in his own fantasy world much of the time.
