The legacy of Senator Sanders in the Senate has mostly been limited to renaming two Vermont post offices. But at least something significant will be named after him.
A Cuban spider.
On Tuesday, a second figure from the 2016 presidential campaign got a species. Spintharus berniesandersi, named after Sen Bernie Sanders, I-Vt, lives in Cuba. It is small and lemon-yellow and barely a millimetre wide. On the spider’s back is an ornate pattern halfway between a distorted smiley face and grimace.
I can't think of a better namesake for Bernie than a creepy crawler from a Communist failed state being kept alive by leftist support.
And Bernie's spider friends will have good Socialist company.
Four University of Vermont undergraduates, with the guidance of biologist Ingi Agnarsson, identified Spintharus berniesandersi. The students also found 14 other new spider species, which they named after political figures (Obama got his 10th species; Michelle Obama her first),
If you find a spider crawling along your arm, better be careful. It might be a Berniesandersi or a BarackObami.
