They just won't cotton to it.
As the glorious Cultural Revolution marches on, you can just randomly throw together sentences like this. "College President apologizes for X". And X can be anything. It can be a sombrero, wood paneling, a banana peel or cotton stalk centerpieces.
All of these, and many more, have been at the center of campus social justice crybully outrages.
To paraphrase Orwell, the purpose of being offended is to be offended. And the purpose of that is power. So they will find something to be offended by. You bet your cotton undershirt, they will.
A Facebook post taking Hobby Lobby to task for a display that included cotton plants is igniting its own controversy.
Late last week, Daniell Rider of Killeen, Texas posted a photo and a message to the craft chain's Facebook page, saying the decorative cotton in a glass vase was "so wrong on so many levels." Cotton was a prime export of the pre-Civil War South.
"There is nothing decorative about raw cotton. A commodity which was gained at the expense of African-American slaves," she wrote. "A little sensitivity goes a long way. Please remove this decor."
In another cotton controversy, the president of Nashville's Lipscomb University offered an apology after cotton stalks were used in a centerpiece at a dinner at his home for African-American students. After the dinner, a student complained on social media that the centerpiece was offensive.
In a statement, Lipscomb President Randy Lowry said he could have handled the dinner "with more sensitivity."
"I sincerely apologize for the discomfort, anger or disappointment we caused and solicit your forgiveness," Lowry said.
Cotton is now racist.
Here's more from that post.
Last night we invited Lipscomb African American students to our home for dinner to discuss their experiences at Lipscomb. Several students shared with me their concern about the material used for centerpieces which contained stalks of cotton.
The content of the centerpieces was offensive, and I could have handled the situation with more sensitivity. I sincerely apologize for the discomfort, anger or disappointment we caused and solicit your forgiveness.
And here's the unhinged rant by Nakayla Yvonne, the crybully who started this tantrum.
So I attend Lipscomb university and as most of you know that is a predominately white school. Tonight AFRICAN AMERICAN students were invited to have dinner with the president of the school. As we arrived to the president's home and proceeded to go in we seen cotton as the center pieces.
We seen that Yvonne appears linguistically unready for college. We seen that this is what happens when you accept unqualified students into an environment that they are unready for. We seen that instead of educating themselves, they cause problems.
We also stood and ate dinner, there were no seats to sit in and it felt very uncomfortable. We were very offended, and also the meals that were provided resembled many "black meals" they had mac n cheese, collard greens, corn bread etc.
And then king cotton reared its ugly stalk.
my friend @kay_cyann asked why there was cotton on the table as the center piece. His response was that he didn't know, he seen it before we did, he kind of thought it was " fallish", THEN he said " it ISNT INHERENTLY BAD IF WERE ALL WEARING IT " then walked off.
Everyone hide the cotton! It's a racist plant.
we had the impression that we were coming to speak about how us as Black people feel about Lipscomb. The whole entire time we were in their home they only talked about themselves( how they met, got married and ended up at lipscomb) & the ONLY question that we were asked was our transformation coming to lipscomb.
Once upon a time, an immature tantrum like this was just a sign of entitlement. Today it's social justice. And because of it we must ban cotton immediately.
