CNBC Editor-in-Chief: Viewers Not as "Stupid As We Think They Are"

Coming out of the black hole of smugness that is the Aspen Ideas Festival, at a panel where Katie Couric presumes to talk about journalism, this is a dash of cold water.

It's not as if what Nikhil Deogun, Editor-in-Chief at CNBC is saying, is really anything new. Once upon a time these were basic principles. And then they went away.

Nikhil Deogun talks about the slippage in interpretation from reporting to editorializing, but this was more of a concern a decade ago. Likewise, informing readers of what you don't know now seems so outmoded that it might as well be coming out of another century.

We're in the Democracy Dies in Darkness era. Most news stories touching any partisan issue are editorials filled with special pleading, smears and a simplistic narrative.

And yes, readers, viewers and users are not that stupid. Some are. But anyone who has a genuine opinion and pays attention can quickly spot the shoddy bias. And even if they keep watching, reading or listening, credibility is lost.
