This is what Democracy in a leftist one-party state is like.
Despite the collapse of California into a political torpor in which the lunatics in Sacramento backed by legal and illegal migrants from south of the border get to impose any tax and spend policies they want, voters were roused to outrage over the gas tax. Facing the threat of a recall election, California Dems decided to fight democracy for the gas tax and protect their own offices.
State Senate Democrats introduced legislation Monday to change the rules governing recall elections to remove a lawmaker from office, potentially helping one of their own survive an effort now underway in Southern California.
The proposal, contained in one of the bills enacting a new state budget, comes after backers of an effort to remove state Sen. Josh Newman (D-Fullerton) from office have submitted more than 31,000 voter signatures to trigger a special election.
As Jazz Shaw points out, this would make recalls nearly impossible when faced with an effective leftist opposition.
They’ll be giving anyone who signed the petitions a chance to ask to have their names pulled. The petitioners would then have to remove the names, redo the tallies, and manually verify every signature. And they’ve got to get all of that done in 30 days or the petition is tossed. We’re talking about tens of thousands of signatures here. Are you kidding me?
All the party will need to do is send out volunteers to find a couple of people who signed the petitions without thinking very much about it and convince them to demand the change. At that point, the resources required to pull off the adjustments will be demanding to say the least.
That means the only conservative efforts at recall elections would have to be well funded efforts by the same sort of groups that the left claims is undermining democracy.
But the party that fights Voter ID tooth and nail, wants what amounts to a Recall ID process. The stench of the hypocrisy is overwhelming. Voter fraud favors the left. Recall elections in California are much more likely to impact the left. So the last remnants of democracy in California are being shredded.
