You might remember this story from a few years ago.
The FBI busted Muhammad Dakhlalla and Jaelyn Delshaun Young for trying to join ISIS.
Jaelyn Delshaun Young was the daughter of a cop before she converted to Islam and renamed herself Aminah Al-Amiriki. Muhammad is the son of a Mississippi Imam from a family of Muslim settlers living in the United States.
The story was obviously ripe for one those sympathetic media family background pieces. Except this one, by Emma Green at the Atlantic, was funded by the Open Society Foundations as part of its Beyond Diversity project. So at least the media is cutting out the middlemen between it and George Soros.
Also Beyond Diversity now includes sympathetic pieces on Muslims watching gay execution videos and trying to join a murderous rape and death cult.
But it's not news that liberals are more sympathetic to ISIS members than to Republicans.
Still there is an interesting little detail buried in the piece.
He participated in the Muslim Students Association, although not as actively as his brothers... Moe’s brothers would study the Koran; they prayed regularly and fasted.
There is a long list of MSA to Islamic terrorism connections. This is just another one.
In between all the sad sack stories about how sad Jaelyn and Muhammad were, there is the occasional revealing moment.
She pushed Moe to keep studying: “Before you say ISIS does not represent Islam, I challenge you to read Sharia or Hadith/Sunnah,” she wrote.
Kind of hard to argue with that. And don't worry, Mohammed is really connecting with Islam in prison.
Moe tutors fellow inmates in English and math at his prison home in Jesup, Georgia. He exercises a lot and reads sci-fi, and he’s thinking about learning a trade—maybe air-conditioning repair, or electrical work. One thing he appreciates about prison, he told me, is practicing Islam. Instead of watching videos alone in a campus apartment with his girlfriend, or memorizing verses under the watchful eye of his father, he feels he has a community. “I meet about 10-15 Sunni Muslims here on a weekly basis,” he told me in a letter. “The first big lesson I learned from my Muslim brothers is that my knowledge about faith is at an all time low. Just reading about the basics of Islam and the oneness of Allah is a big change compared to listening to it from my parents and community that I grew up in.”
Isn't it great how taxpayers are paying for this?
But the Emma Green\George Soros pitch is that we ought to be more like Europe and instead of arresting terrorists, we should tip them off that we're on to them by contacting their families and telling them they're being naughty.
Emma neglects to mention how well that hands off policy worked out with some recent Islamic terrorists.
