The New Republic went from a respectable publication to a social justice sewer. This is just another example of how low the social justice sewer flows.
When Hannah Black and her co-signers call for the destruction of this painting, try not to interpret them as book-burners doing the work of censorship.
Hannah Black is a British "artist" with a white mother and whose father was half-Jamaican and half-Irish who specializes in black identity. Black wrote a letter to the Whitney demanding that a painting of Emmett Till be destroyed (yes, destroyed) "because it is not acceptable for a white person to transmute Black suffering into profit and fun".
Black (who appears to be 3/4 white) goes on to rant about "the white gaze". The rest is the crazed hateful garbage you increasingly expect from the identity politics of the left.
"Although Schutz’s intention may be to present white shame, this shame is not correctly represented as a painting of a dead Black boy by a white artist — those non-Black artists who sincerely wish to highlight the shameful nature of white violence should first of all stop treating Black pain as raw material. The subject matter is not Schutz’s; white free speech and white creative freedom have been founded on the constraint of others, and are not natural rights. The painting must go."
"Ongoing debates on the appropriation of Black culture by non-Black artists," writes a woman who is not that much more black than Rachel Dolezal. And who has nothing to do with African-American issues at all.
And yes, Hannah Black wants it destroyed. "I am writing to ask you to remove Dana Schutz’s painting “Open Casket” and with the urgent recommendation that the painting be destroyed and not entered into any market or museum."
Remember when burning books and paintings was a bad thing? That was before the left turned right back to its ugly totalitarian roots.
And so the New Republic decided to run a piece in support of burning paintings. " When Hannah Black and her co-signers call for the destruction of this painting, try not to interpret them as book-burners doing the work of censorship," it concludes.
Try not to call censorship... censorship.
The New Republic piece is by Josephine Livingstone and an appropriate identity group collaborator. Livingstone, like so many of the hires at the debased New Republic, is a recent grad, who doesn't know much. But she certainly knows white people are evil.
Emmett Till died because a white woman lied about their brief interaction... For a white woman to paint Emmett Till’s mutilated face communicates not only a tone-deafness toward the history of his murder, but an ignorance of the history of white women’s speech in that murder—the way it cancelled out Till’s own expression, with lethal effect.
And thus all white women are guilty. Except Josephine Livingstone who also appears to be... a white woman.
This sad, disgusting racist freak show is another demonstration of how the left is eating itself. How its madness and racism are driving out anyone with a gram of decency and leaving behind white people who are making a career out of hating white people... while denouncing white people for exploiting black people by hating white people. If you can parse this madness, you too can be on the left.
