Events are still developing, but here is what we know. The current total is 4 dead and 20 wounded. The attack is being named as Abu Izzadeen, Trevor Brooks, a known Jihadist preacher.
We're in the one year anniversary of the Brussels attack. So the timing is right.
A knife-wielding "Asian" man was shot after stabbing a police officer at the Houses of Parliament.
Jayne Wilkinson said: “We were taking photos of Big Ben and we saw all the people running towards us, and then there was an Asian guy in about his 40s carrying a knife about seven or eight inches long.
“And then there were three shots fired, and then we crossed the road and looked over. The man was on the floor with blood.
“He had a lightweight jacket on, dark trousers and a shirt.
“He was running through those gates, towards Parliament, and the police were chasing him.”
More seriously, the attack had a vehicular component that left a number of people injured.
Meanwhile, a number of injured people were seen lying injured on Westminster Bridge near parliament. It is understood a car hit a number of people near the bridge. Photographs showed people lying on the ground, bleeding heavily. The number of casualties was unclear.
At least two women and two men were among those injured. One picture appeared to show a women trapped underneath a bus.
Scotland Yard said the attack in Westminster was being treated “as a terrorist incident until we know otherwise”.
The early police view emerging from the chaos is there were probably two sites of attack: Westminster Bridge where people may have been run over and Parliament itself.
There are obvious echoes of the Islamic terror attack in Ottawa. And it appears to have many of the components of the current wave of Islamic terror, the use of a car and a knife, both of which have been encouraged by Al Qaeda and ISIS. Meanwhile here's a story from rather recently.
U.S. and Belgian officials have grown increasingly worried about the prospect that a key figure behind the 2016 Brussels bombings is plotting a new terror attack, according to people briefed on the investigation.
And here we are. Various stories are emerging from the attack.
Tobias Ellwood, the foreign minister, attempted to save the life of the policeman who was stabbed just inside the gates of the parliamentary estate.
The Tory MP attempted to give the officer mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and stemmed the blood flow by applying pressure to the wounds.
Mr Elwood – himself a former soldier – remained with the injured officer awaiting the for the air ambulance to arrive, which landed off in Parliament Square.
