There was a time when you couldn't turn on cable news without the Khandashians being on every channel and whining about how mean Trump was. Then, with the news circus having moved on, Khizr Khan went too far. He tried to pull a scam that even the left-wing media couldn't quite swallow. The media was happy to report on assorted people being detained for various reasons. But there was a limit.
It started when Khizr Khan canceled an event in Canada. (Try saying that four times fast.) This was the explanation given.
KHIZR KHAN EVENT CANCELLATION
Late Sunday evening Khizr Khan, an American citizen for over 30 years, was notified that his travel privileges are being reviewed. As a consequence, Mr. Khan will not be traveling to Toronto on March 7th to speak about tolerance, understanding, unity and the rule of law. Very regretfully, Ramsay Talks must cancel its luncheon with Mr. Khan. Guests will be given full refunds.
Mr. Khan offered his sincere apologies to all those who made plans to attend on March 7th. He said: "This turn of events is not just of deep concern to me but to all my fellow Americans who cherish our freedom to travel abroad. I have not been given any reason as to why. I am grateful for your support and look forward to visiting Toronto in the near future."
Even most of the media did a double take. What did "travel privileges" being reviewed mean?
Khan himself is doing little to clear up the confusion. An email sent to the KM Khan law office, which lists Khizr Khan as an attorney, on Monday was returned with a brief response: “I have no comments." It's unclear whether it was Khan himself who replied. Multiple media outlets, including The Washington Post, Reuters, McClatchy, and Politico, reported that Khan declined or did not respond to additional requests for comment.
So now Khan has finally "cleared up" matters.
Finally, in a Friday afternoon email to this reporter, Khan explains: "I did not want to go through the hassle of uncertain rules and capricious implementation."
Khan also expressed his concern about Muslim profiling with the local bar association.
"Seeing things like Muhammed Ali Jr. being detained. Muslim but American citizens being detained at the border."
A reporter sought but didn't receive a comment from U.S. Customs & Border Protection, and Khan says he won't go abroad until there's clarity.
So to summarize... Khan chose not to travel to Canada. No "travel privileges" were ever being reviewed. He continues to blame President Trump for his decision and supposed Islamophobia, but he could have just said in the first place that he doesn't want to deal with border hassles. Instead, this raises the possibility that Khan wanted to pull out of an engagement and rather than be honest, he tried to blame his decision on Trump.
