Law Enforcement: Bomb Threats to Jewish Centers Coming from Overseas

That's the latest reporting on a situation in which Jewish institutions around the country were targeted leading, in some cases, to the evacuation of schools and other disturbing moments.

Law enforcement officials believe many of the threatening calls have originated overseas. So far, none of the threats have been carried out. But the lack of destruction has not made them any less chaotic or anxiety-inducing.

Assuming that is correct and that law enforcement hasn't been tricked by having the calls routed to make them seem as if they were coming from abroad, the situation is becoming clarified.

There were always two possible vectors for these threats. They might have come from keyboard warrior Jihadists or out of the anti-Semitic Alt currents of the Anon/Chan culture. The large scale of it always suggested online organizations and enough technical sophistication to drag this out.

The overseas factor doesn't rule out either one. They both have international elements. But Islamic harassment would find more legal advantages in operating abroad and targeting Jews in America.

European Neo-Nazis have a more restrictive domestic legal environment and Jews to harass in their own countries. There are however few Jews living in Muslim countries. And phoning in bomb threats from a Muslim country to Jewish institutions involves less legal risk than jaywalking in New York City.

There are always other possibilities. We could be looking at a harassment campaign conducted from Europe, but organized in the US, but waged abroad. It would, if nothing else, slow down an investigation due to the need to share information and coordinate an investigation between international agencies. And yet it's curious that an international campaign out of Europe would target US institutions while seemingly leaving European ones alone. There are still no answers so the investigation and the speculation continues.
