Denmark Man Charged With Blasphemy for Burning Koran

Saudi Arabia or Denmark? You spot the difference.

The 42-year-old filmed himself burning a copy of Islam's holy book in his back yard in December 2015. He then posted the video on the anti-Islamic Facebook group, "Yes to freedom - no to Islam"

And the authorities said, "Yes to Islam, no to freedom".

A number of European countries have blasphemy laws still on the books. Quite a few have removed them. A majority of voters in Denmark support removing its blasphemy law.

While we like to think that this can't happen here, Hillary Clinton did send a man to jail for a Youtube video critical of Mohammed. Chris Christie tried to fire a state employee who tore up a Koran in another state. A man was given community service after trying to flush a Koran at Pace University. The detective in the case was Muslim. And there was a push to treat such cases as incitement to violence.

So it can happen here.

The difference is that Denmark has a blasphemy law on the books so there is more honesty about what is going on. We have blasphemy prosecutions under the guise of hate crimes or vandalism.
