Schumer's Backing for Ellison's Anti-Semitism is a Betrayal of Jewish Voters

It was not a question of if but when Senator Schumer would sell out Jewish voters for his big seat at the top of the pile in the Senate. Iran forced Schumer to temporarily infuriate his party's left-wing masters while trying to appease angry Jewish supporters. But by backing Keith Ellison, Schumer threw caution to the winds and decided to go all in on an anti-Semite.

As a reminder, this is who Keith X. Ellison is.

In 1995, Ellison himself organized a rally featuring Muhammad—still an outspoken racist and anti-Semite—at the University of Minnesota. Muhammad apparently brought his A-game to the rally, promising that “if words were swords, the chests of Jews, gays and whites would be pierced.”

In 1997, Ellison defended a member of the Minneapolis Initiative Against Racism who said that Jews are “the most racist white people.” In his remarks, Ellison also defended America’s most notorious anti-Semite. “She is correct about Minister Farrakhan,” Ellison insisted. “He is not a racist. He is also not an anti-Semite. Minister Farrakhan is a tireless public servant of Black people…”

In fact, Ellison continued to publicly defend Louis Farrakhan and the Nation of Islam through at least the year 2000, by which time he was serving as a Minnesota state representative.

The ADL backed away from Keith Ellison after this rant about Israel surfaced

But a 2010 audio of Ellison speaking at a private fundraiser obtained by the Investigative Project on Terrorism calls such praise into question. In a fairly intimate setting, Ellison lashed out at what he sees as Israel’s disproportionate influence in American foreign policy. That will change, he promised:

The United States’ foreign policy in the Middle East is governed by what is good or bad through a country of 7 million people. A region of 350 million all turns on a country of 7 million. Does that make sense? Is that logic? Right? When the Americans who trace their roots back to those 350 million get involved, everything changes. Can I say that again?

The fundraiser for Ellison’s re-election campaign was hosted by Esam Omeish, a past president of the Muslim American Society (MAS), who was forced to resign from a Virginia state immigration panel in 2007 after an exclusive IPT videotape showed him praising Palestinians for choosing the “the jihad way … to liberate your land.” Omeish was a candidate for Virginia’s general assembly the previous year, and Ellison spoke at a fundraiser for that losing effort.

In his 2010 remarks, Ellison described Omeish as “my beloved brother” and said, “I love you and you are the best and your family is so beautiful and again, you know, you put it out there. You ran. And I hope you run again.”

But that doesn't seem to bother Schumer who put out a statement backing Ellison. "I stand by Rep. Ellison for DNC chair. We have discussed his views on Israel at length, and while I disagree with some of his past positions, I saw him orchestrate one of the most pro-Israel platforms in decades."

Schumer's claim is laughable as Ellison's role was to actually tilt away from support for Israel. But Schumer has dismissed the issue. “I’m not worried about the Israel stuff.”

His casual contempt for his Jewish voters reveals how much of a charade his whole Shomer routine always was.
