Political hobgoblin Charlie Crist is the single unkillable force in American politics today. He loses election after election and yet always returns. He's lost elections as a Republican, Democrat and Independent.
What's left now except joining the Communist or Nazi parties? Or running for Congress. Because if there's one thing that can take Congress to the next level, it's a shameless political opportunist who believes in nothing and will say anything to get ahead. So obviously Charlie Crist is running for Congress. It's either that or become a monk and take a vow of silence while making silence.
And that's not Charlie's style. Charlie's style is an orange tan, impossible hair and teeth, and the conviction that our nation has committed sins that can only be atoned for by inflicting himself on us.
Now, after back-to-back statewide losses (first for the Senate in 2010 and then in a retry for the governor’s mansion in 2014), Crist and his critics recognize that this election will offer either some measure of redemption or deliver the final, sour note of his once-promising political career. Lose this time — the onetime Republican and independent is running as a Democrat against GOP Rep. David Jolly — and even Crist’s allies say he’s done.
"Truly, for him, this is win or go home,” said Democratic strategist Steve Schale, a Florida operative who advised Crist in his last governor’s race but isn’t involved in this campaign.
Nah.
Lose this one and Charlie Crist will be campaigning next year for dogcatcher.
Charlie Crist will never go home. Decades from now he will still be running, and probably losing, elections. Until one day, Fiji or Finland decides he would make a perfect king.
