The founder of a match-making website for Muslim men seeking multiple wives says the practice is growing in popularity in Australia, despite polygamy being illegal.
There are about 180 male users and 12 female users in Australia listed on the site seeking second marriages, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.
180 male users and 12 female users? Yes, that does sound about right. This is why polygamy doesn't work too well when women are allowed to leave the house.
President of the Australian Federation of Islamic Councils, Keysar Trad, says polygamy offers women rights, rather than having to label them as a mistress.
It's really flattering, I'm sure. And Trad gets a hankering for a mistress/second wife when his wife is away.
WHEN his wife was away in Lebanon for several months with their six children, Keysar Trad was lonely and considered taking a second wife.
It seemed the natural thing to do for Trad, 44, who lives in Sydney's western suburbs.
Of course it does. If your wife is away, you need a replacement wife. It's the Islamic way.
Whether a second wife would work in the Trad household remains another issue. The Trads say they have discussed the idea only in principle.

Because Australian taxpayers just aren't on the hook enough for Muslim migrants and settlers already. And Muslim women aren't abused enough. And there aren't enough clashes between Western and Muslim values.
To my surprise, I was reported on the ABC’s respected current affairs program AM the next morning. Without speaking to me again and after seeking comments from the Attorney-General’s office, AM ran the line: “Undeterred Keysar Trad says he’s hoping to find another wife to join his family. To do so, he says, would be to honour his first wife.”
No such comment had aired on Hack. The media then spent more than a week mocking the practice of a husband having two or more wives simultaneously...
The willingness of a man to take on another wife is in fact a form of praise to his first wife...
Monogamy is great, but it is clearly not for everybody.
Clearly not for Muslims. Just one more "fact of life" we have to accept if we want to continue bringing in Muslim migrants.
